Well the show was a hit! The works were extremely well received with red dots appearing from the get go. The works were wonderfully placed, complimenting each other in such a way that allowed the eye to flow effortlessly from one piece to the next. The collection was very strong, confident and engaging and I would say Michelle's best work to date - and that's saying something:) It rocked big time!

I urge those who can to go and have a look see!

BTW - I was going to post pics, though I forgot to take the bloody camera!

Last night at 9:30pm Channel 31 aired the premiere episode of their music review show Dancing about Architecture. It was a fantastic show that was incredibly fun, relaxed, informative and entertaining . I also designed the logo for the show and was blown away by how they'd animated it during the opening titles. My dad phoned at 10pm last night, urging me to go out and have a look at the moon. I'm glad he did as we got to see Jupiter and Venus also. The photo came out a little distorted. So trust me when I say those squiggly lines are Jupiter and Venus - only happens every 6 years.

The opening went really well. I sold before the show even opened which was a shock - and received some great feedback. Plus they've expressed interest in wanting me for 2 shows next year and to represent. Head spinning......

The Dance of All Hallow's Eve - Joe Sorren

Joe Sorren is without a doubt one of my favorite artists today. His work is so wondrously tender, surreal and innocent. If you're not familiar with his work then get yourself to his website pronto! Or Check out his blog - which sometimes has WIP shots, exploring his artistic process..

In this day and age it's pretty damn alarming to learn that some people still get quite uneasy about nudity in art. I honestly don't get it. What is so offensive about a naked body? To be offended by a naked body is to be offended by the human form. Are they ashamed of their own bodies? Do they shower with their eyes closed or ensure the bedroom is pitch black on occasion. I feel sad for and pity those who take issue with nudity in art, as they're missing out on the wonderful masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance for one. There is nothing more honest, insightful, vulnerable and beautiful than the naked form.

Ok, there's still a bit to do on this one. The origami wasp needs a heaps of detail applied - the horizon line will be lighter/faded and the girl's hair will be textured with highlights etc.. Anyway this series has a touch of Pop Surrealism and is basically me unleashing my imagination:) Bit nervous about this brief departure from usual style.

I started 3 newies over the weekend. Always boring painting the initial stages - I'd love to be able to fast-forward to a later stage past the under-painting. They are to be incredibly detailed pieces. So I look at the under-paintings and think "Man there's a long way to go".

I managed to get some painting in last night. It was one of those great painting sessions where a few hours literally whooshed by without notice. These are by far the most productive sessions (well for me anyway). I get so focussed and into the painting I almost go into automatic pilot. After a few hours (which seem like mere minutes) I stand back and think Did I just do that? Wish it would happen more often:)

Trying to Balance a full time job with Freelance work and most importantly painting can be quite the task. I think I'm coping alright, though it does have it's moments. Painting is one of those things that requires the right state of mind. Trying to schedule painting times in advance can backfire big time. That bloody right state of mind can quickly leave town and wont come back until you least expect it. If I don't feel up to painting I simply wont, as I know the painting will suffer as a consequence.

The works I'm doing for Manyung are quite detailed pieces and consequently bloody time consuming:) I'm enjoying the process immensely, though they demand much of my time as each painting requires countless thin layer upon layer of subtle detail. I did quite a bit of work on them during the weekend and will post some pics when closer to completion. These pieces aren't in my usual style as they're quite whimsical and detailed - will share soon..

Yesterday afternoon was a blast. I had the privilege of being invited down to Working Dog studios for a catchup with Santo and to watch them film The Hollowmen. Michael Hirsh gave me the grand tour and introduced me to most of the cast including Rob Sitch and Lachy Hulme. It was interesting to see how the actors worked as Lachy seem to stay in character off camera also - took me a while to realize this:). The set consisted of corridors and offices based on existing rooms from parliament House. I was also taken up to the editing suite where I watched put a scene together - very interesting to watch. So yeah, It was a great afternoon:)

She really liked my work and expressed much interest in representing me - I have such a good feeling about Michele and her gallery the answer was easy - YES!

I have a few things in the works at the moment. I'm still madly painting for my November solo at Manyung. I've also been approached by the Convent Gallery in Daylesford to have a solo there next year - so will be meeting with them very soon. Plus I'm meeting with a Melbourne
Gallery in the heart of the city on Saturday for a potential show - so excited about that one:) I'm also working on all the art and design for a mainstream movie in the works.. So it's all systems go!

Lastly I'm very excited as Santo has invited me down to the filming of Hollowmen next week for a catchup - so that should be great fun!

Opening Night Cocktail Party!

I had a fantastic time last night! Jem and I attended the Hidden Faces of the Archibald opening last night and enjoyed every minute of it. The paintings were incredible and strategcally placed all around the Park Hyatt. I was lucky enough to have mine placed in the main room where the function was held. It was also wonderful to meet fellow artists Helen Edwards and Raelene Sharp who also attended - who I hope to keep in contact with:)

This morning I dropped my portrait off at the Park Hyatt Melbourne for the Hidden Faces of the Archibald show opening this Wed night. With large painting under arm I wandered around the busy hotel until I found the drop off point. I did get a 'lovely' and 'wonderful' from one of the organisers - which is always so nice and re-assuring when dropping off work for some odd reason.

Sorry for the severe lack of posts lately. For the past month and a bit I've been quite busy tackling the everyday hiccups life can throw at you from time to time. Things seem to have settled again, which means time for painting is once more! Here's a progress shot of my current painting. I'm going to put this one into over-drive and try to get it finished by the end of the long weekend. I've applied more detail to the face and fixed up her once wonky eye.. I received a letter yesterday afternoon inviting me to exhibit my Santo portrait as part of Hidden Faces of the Archibald exhibition to be held at the Park Hyatt Melbourne this June/July. I had a very productive painting session last night. The painting is getting to a stage now where thin layer upon layer are starting to come together nicely. I'm enjoying the slow process this time around - as I'm finding it quite relaxing to just hang with the painting. I'm hoping to finish this one by mid May. I'll post a pic once complete - or near to.

Seven Possibilities

The seven canvases I'd ordered were ready to be picked up on Sat. I was very excited to bring them home and make a start. I've been sketching ideas the past month for a new series in the works. I'm going to be painting very stylized geishas in dream like environments.

Here's a quick sketch from a while back that prompted the idea...

I've already made a start on the canvas by sketching a basic plan of attack.. I don't want to give too much away - so I wont post any more pics until each one is finished.

Oh, I also managed to wash all my nearly dead brushes on Sunday after they'd been marinating in a cocktail of chemicals for 2 months. Thankfully I've managed to save about 90% of them. Whoohoo!

Well it's been a while since I've posted....better late then never I guess. A few things are on the go at the moment. I've had a few meetings with Bob Franklin and am starting his portrait any day now. We had one meeting at Hampton Beach where he posed for me and was able to gather all the info I needed. He has such an expressive face, so it should be a great painting to sink my teeth into. The concept for the painting is a bit warped and very dry - though that's bob to a tee:) I'm also going to be doing a bit of design work for Bob for an upcoming movie he is working on - I'll be working on the design and artwork for posters, storyboards etc for it.

Um.... Oh, I met with Manyung Gallery not long ago and have been offered a solo show in November - so I will constantly be working on paintings for that during the year also. I'm very excited about this show and finally have a clear idea for the direction of the paintings..

Oh, I also just found out yesterday that Hamish and Andy and interested in being painted by me for the Archibald 2010 - I received an email from Hamish yesterday - so will be meeting up with them later on in the year after my Bob Franklin painting is complete. Sadly I've had to cancel my June solo as there is just too much going on currently - and I hate having to rush things....

Everything I paint seems be turning into pig swirl. Lets hope I shake it ASAP! It makes me a little concerned as I have a solo in June. I took these a few mornings ago while on the way to work. The moon was such a great shape and the sky such an amazing colour. I had to be quick as a car was coming up behind me - so they are a tad blurry.

I'm hoping to incorporate them into future paintings.

Burning Sensations..

I met with Bob Franklin on Saturday in Hampton - It went extremely well. We spoke for about an hour and he was such a friendly and funny guy. The only problem was I'd somehow splashed turps on my lower leg moments before leaving the house to meet him - this became more evident as it began to burn during our meeting. Trying my best to hide the pain, I found myself lifting up my pant leg from time to time to watch it get progressively worse, as it quickly went through 5 different shades of red. We'll prob meet up again in a week or so - no using turps before out next meeting! haha - The patch of skin is still glowing..

Oh, I also had another meeting with Manyung Gallery in Mt Eliza. Well I'm excited to say I now have a 2nd Solo show this year booked for November. Very excited about this one!

I had so much fun painting Santo for the 2008 Archibald that I'm keen to do it again. I've been lucky enough to get actor/comedian Bob Franklin (Bad Eggs, Boy Town, Stupid Stupid Man, Thank god you're here, Newstopia, Macbeth, The librarians and much much more) to agree to sit for me for Archibald 09. He was so lay back and friendly during our telephone conversation today, so I can't wait for our first meeting this Saturday.

Also the local paper asked me if they could do a piece on my upcoming show close to the opening - so that'll be great publicity to get the locals in:)

Yesterday I met Santo at Louey and Lane Gallery for our Herald Sun photograph. It was so much fun and a fair few shots were taken. I'm not sure exactly when the article goes to print - though I'll let you know as soon as I do..

At long last the Australian Government is apologizing to the aboriginal community for past mistreatment. This apology will finally allow the beginning of a long healing process for many aboriginals.

I really don't understand the pure ignorance of some who are against this apology. Frankly the 'red neck' attitude of 'We didn't do it, why should we..' is just appalling. Our hearts go out to all aboriginals as we recognise past mistreatment and the immense heartache and grief this has caused..

K-Rud and team did a great job with the wording. Actual wording:

Today we honour the Indigenous peoples of this land, the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

We reflect on their past mistreatment.

We reflect in particular on the mistreatment of those who were stolen generations - this blemished chapter in our nation's history.

The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page in Australia's history by righting the wrongs of the past and so moving forward with confidence to the future.

We apologise for the laws and policies of successive Parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians.

We apologise especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and their country.

For the pain, suffering and hurt of these stolen generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry.

To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry.

And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry.

We the Parliament of Australia respectfully request that this apology be received in the spirit in which it is offered as part of the healing of the nation.

For the future we take heart; resolving that this new page in the history of our great continent can now be written.

We today take this first step by acknowledging the past and laying claim to a future that embraces all Australians.

A future where this Parliament resolves that the injustices of the past must never, never happen again.

A future where we harness the determination of all Australians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to close the gap that lies between us in life expectancy, educational achievement and economic opportunity.

A future where we embrace the possibility of new solutions to enduring problems where old approaches have failed.

A future based on mutual respect, mutual resolve and mutual responsibility.

A future where all Australians, whatever their origins, are truly equal partners, with equal opportunities and with an equal stake in shaping the next chapter in the history of this great country, Australia.

This also emphasises what a breath of fresh air the new government is, giving hope for the future.

Santo stopped by last week to see his portrait - and thankfully he really liked it........phew! He has such an appreciation for art, and it was great he appreciated this piece of art;)

Oh, I also tinkered with the painting a touch. I dulled some of the detail in the face to give it a more natural look..

I had a most productive painting session last night. The portrait is so very nearly done. I just have to apply the text on the can and I'm done. Sounds easy, though it's going to be so damn fiddly - To paint text that resembles printed text is quite a challenge. Maybe I can just write the text using a label maker and slap it on:) Anyway you'll all see the painting very very soon..

Ok, I'm very nearly finished my painting. Hopefully during the week I'll have a pic of the finished product posted. I need to apply some detail to a couple of items in the painting and then I'm done! whoohooo!

Santo just called me about 5 minutes ago - The Herald Sun article is all systems go. We're doing the photo and interview the first week of Feb - I better get my arse into gear and finish soon!

Last night I spent about 2 hours going over Mick. He still needs some more work - though I need to wait for him to dry before slapping on more detail. He's a tricky one to paint, as he needs to be slightly our of focus and dimly lit. Tonight I plan to focus on the background. I've already done a couple of rough layers - now it's time to build up the detail. The background is simple red curtains. Though they're extremely dark (almost black in parts) with random highlights. I wont post another pic of the painting until nearly done - there has to be some surprise:)
